Preliminary Hearing Begins in Tyler Robinson Case: Prosecutors Detail Evidence Against Alleged Assassin of Charlie Kirk

PROVO, Utah — The preliminary hearing for Tyler Robinson, the man charged with the September 2025 assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, opened Monday in Utah's 4th District Court, with prosecutors presenting a detailed case aimed at establishing probable cause for a full trial.

Robinson, 23, faces charges including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstructing justice, and witness tampering. Prosecutors have indicated they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted. The weeklong hearing, which began on July 6, 2026, marks the most significant public presentation of evidence to date in the emotionally charged case.

Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. Robinson turned himself in the following day. His family, including parents Robert and Kathryn Kirk and widow Erika Kirk, attended the hearing, coming face-to-face with the accused for the first time in court.

Prosecutors called law enforcement witnesses and introduced dozens of exhibits, including surveillance video from the scene and forensic evidence. A former officer described discovering a "sniper pad" on a nearby rooftop shortly after the shooting, suggesting premeditation. Autopsy reports and digital records were also submitted despite repeated defense objections on hearsay grounds.
